Eight benefits of YMIG (Mittagong)
1. It is very close to Sydney (just 90km South of it) but has very easy access from North, West and South. For those who want the challenge of greater complexity (C & D airspace, ATC, IFR) that is all available or very close, but is not required, ie. is very easily avoided.
2. It has a 1500m long sealed strip. It has Fuel, Oils, etc via a club member. It has a club house with refreshments, snacks, small meals, hot/cold drinks. A welcome/farewell BBQ can be arranged easily, if so wanted. Security locked gates are standard procedure.
3. YMIG is within 10 minutes flight of ShellHarbor (HARS), Wedderburn (SAAA & RV homeland). Within 30 minutes flight of Moruya (beach, cafe, skydive) & 30 minutes of Canberra (city orbits or just fly into in international AND Military airport). Temora, Jindabyne, Tumut, and the Hunter Valley are just 1 hr away. Of course a 1 hr flight will also see you do the Victor One past the Heads and beach fronts of Sydney, flying either individually or in company.
4. YMIG is in the heart of the Southern Highlands, where Sydney’s well-heeled gentry have been coming for over 150 years to relax, unwind and holiday. Accommodation is plentiful. Tourism in the Southern Highlands is extensive (historic trains, buildings, towns, ghost tours, wineries, pubs favoured by Ben Hall and Capt. Starlight). Mittagong is on the Sydney City Rail Network so $2.50 per day at Seniors Concession rate, will buy a full days travel on all Sydney public transport (trains, trams, buses, ferries).
5. I might consider running the fly-in from March 23 or 24, and doing daily planned local flights for the enjoyment of the members attending AND ALSO daily non-flying tourist trips for those who prefer to relax, in the days before the AGM on 28 March. That is, fly in on 22 or 23 March, settle into one’s preferred accommodation (recommendation list to be provided) and participate in daily sorties to beach, HARS, snowy mountains, Victor One, etc. Or winery tasting tour, Berrima village tour, Joadja Ghost town tour, etc. Attend AGM, prep and depart for home on Sunday 29th.
6. There will likely be a landing and parking fee as it is a private strip, but I expect some negotiation in fee to be achieved, in exchange for fuel purchase etc.
7. Weather cannot be predicted, and low cloud could impact flying on some days, but that is counteracted by the plethora of non-flying tourism activities that are available.
8. It is a 10-15 bus trip from the airport to the township/accommodation; but cabs and Uber are plentiful.
Additional Considerations
For next year’s AGM at Mittagong, I would like to encourage members to book their motel accommodation as soon as possible at Springs Mittagong (Mittagong RSL 0248713133) or Grand Country Lodge Motel, Mittagong (0248713277).
It is recommended to book for 5-7 nights, as it suits each member, ensuring that they are booked in for the nights of Friday 27th March and for the AGM on Saturday 28th March 2026.
If RVAA members can start thinking of the AGM not just as a one-day event, but as a multi-day (5-7 day) event including AGM, tours, activities, visits to points of interest/attraction, then everyone will have a marvellous time.
For November’s newsletter, I’ll put together a list of tourism options in the Southern Highlands. These are freely listed and viewable on the Southern Highlands or Wingecarribee Council Tourism Website, but off the top of my head, possibilities include Fly Victor One and maybe orbit Sydney Harbour Bridge, Fly the South Coast, Fly the Snowy Mountains (Jindabyne, Tumut); Tour historic towns, Wine Tasting Tours, Nature Lovers BushWalks, Waterfalls, etc.; NSW Rail Heritage Museums; HARS Museum Tour (Shellharbor); etc. And of course, there is all of sunny Sydney to explore.
It will be important to remember that the Southern Highlands is a very popular tourist centre for Sydney and NSW, so the longer people leave it to book their accommodation, the harder it will be for them to get in, especially on weekends.
If members can’t get into the “Springs” or the “Grand Country Lodge” as recommended, they may need to hire their own transport (car) to get to and from Mittagong Aero Club. For those who may fly commercially to Sydney, it is worth knowing that the Sydney trains run to Mittagong from the Sydney Domestic and International airports. Members can get off the plane, take the lift to the train station, get on a train to Mittagong Station, which is about an hour’s journey.
Of course, flying your aircraft into Mittagong Aero Club will be more fun
